Sustainable Energies Chair

Nuclear and Renewable Energies, in partnership with the Ecole Polytechnique (http://www.polytechnique.fr/). Created in 2008 in partnership with EDF, the European foundation for tomorrow's energies and the Fondation de l'Ecole Polytechnique, the Sustainable Energies Chair is particularly active within the context of the 3rd year teaching programme at the Ecole Polytechnique, focusing on the "Energies of the 20th Century".For the 3rd year programme, the Chair provides specifically nuclear instruction (Reactor Physics, Thermohydraulics and Thermal Exchanges, Reactor and Fuel Cycle Technology).

The tenured professor is Franck Carré, Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique, Senior Vice President for Nuclear Development and Innovation of CEA (Atomic Energy Commision)

The Chair advises 3rd year students on their end of year work placement in the energy sector in France or abroad, and directs them toward branches for specialisation for their Masters, Doctoral training or end of studies engineering projects.

The Chair supports energy research at the Ecole Polytechnique, particularly in the fields of physics, thermohydraulics and materials for reactors, solar energy and fuel cells.

The Chair organises conferences and seminars on topical subjects relating to energy.

Since its inception, the chair has set up three teaching modules dealing specifically with nuclear energy and launched an energy research programme. Its work deals with compressed air energy storage, modelling and simulation of thermoelectric materials, and energy generation from vibrations caused by natural flows.

The chair has also organised and sponsored seminars and symposiums on nuclear energy, including a seminar jointly organised with MIT-CEA-Ecole Polytechnique on “The production of hydrogen from nuclear energy. The chair also supported “Nuits Boréales”, an event organised by the young professionals group of the French Nuclear Society and the Young Generation Network on the nuclear fuel cycle.

The chair provides guidance to students on choosing their future career path. It also promotes links between teaching and industry, organising conferences chaired by key players in the French energy sector.
